Nanofiltration Systems
Ahura Aqua designs & manufactures nanofiltration systems for industrial applications including wastewater recovery or manufacturing process of food & beverage or pharmaceutical industry. Nanofiltration works on the same fundamental working principle as reverse osmosis where a high concentration solution is passed through a semi-permeable membrane under forced pressure. The pore sizes of an NF membrane typically range from 0.01 – 0.001 microns, this factor places it smack in the middle of UF membrane which allows slightly more passage of salt & RO membrane which comparatively allows lesser passage of salt.
Typically, organic molecules with molecular weights > 200 – 400 are rejected. Nanofiltration systems effectively reject a wide range of contaminants such as:
- Dissolved organics.
- Endotoxins/pyrogens.
- Insecticides/pesticides.
- Herbicides.
- Antibiotics.
- Nitrates.
- Sugars.
- Latex emulsions.
- Metal ions.
It can also partially reject soluble salts. Monovalent salts such as NaCl or CaCl have rejections of 20 – 80% whereas divalent salts such as MgSO4 have higher rejections of 90– 98%.
Working Principle of Nanofiltration
Nanofiltration uses moderate pressure to push water through a semi-permeable membrane with pore sizes around 0.001 microns—smaller than Ultrafiltration but larger than Reverse Osmosis.
NF membranes selectively remove:
- Divalent and larger monovalent ions (like calcium, magnesium, sulfate),
- Organic molecules (like pesticides, color, and some pathogens),
While allowing most monovalent salts (like sodium chloride) and small molecules to pass. This makes NF ideal for water softening, partial demineralization, and organic matter removal, with lower energy costs than RO.
In short: Moderate pressure → NF membrane → Retains hardness & organics → Allows some salts → Clean, partially demineralized water.
