De-ionization / De-mineralisation (DI) systems

Deionization of water is done when there is an immediate need of pure water free from any ionic load in close proximity from point of usage. The proximity is important because de-ionized water has a trait of rapid degradation when exposed to the environment for a considerably long duration.

A De-ionizer or De-mineralizing system is used generally downstream from PSF & ACF when considered in the entire stream of water purification. Ion-exchange is a process in which contamination causing cations that are present in the water such as Na+, K+, Fe2+, Ca2+, Mg2+ are replaced by hydrogen ion (H+) when passed through the cation column & the contamination causing anions such as Cl-, HCO3-, NO3-, CO3-, SO4- are replaced by hydroxyl ions (OH-) when passed through the second column which then combine with the hydrogen ions to form water (H2O).
