Industrial pressure sand filters are used in manufacturing units as utility equipment whose main purpose is to eliminate fine particles, suspended solids, organic contamination, odour & colour from the process water. The primary function of a pressure sand filter & activated carbon filter is to reduce the level of Silt Density Index (SDI), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), O/G, Organic matter, Odour & Colour from the incoming feed water. TSS is composed of multiple variants of small particles such as silt, clay, grit, organic matter, algae and other microorganisms. When the raw water or ETP treated water is fed to the PSF, the chemical composition generally shows that the incoming feed water is high in suspended solids, causing a massive pressure drop and hampering the flow of water required for effective purification of downstream filtration equipment such as ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis membranes, electro de-ionization (EDI), UV sterilizer and ion exchange beds.
How It Works ?
A pressure sand filter – sometimes known as multimedia filter – is responsible for eliminating suspended solid or particulate contamination from the chemically treated water. The suspended solids are retained by the fine sand media. The heavier media (sand/anthracite etc) is graded at the bottom as a base to support the finer media which is where the actual filtration takes place. Common media filters include fine sand, anthracite & activated carbon media.
The raw water is passed through this filter and at its entry point, it creates an impact on a distributor, this causes a splurge of distribution of water equally over the filter media for uniform distribution. Ahura Aqua’s pressure sand filters are designed specifically according to the flow required & composition of TSS in the in-feed water. Once the sand filter has reached saturation point where it cannot filter any more water at its designed capacity, it is time to carry out a backwash.
A backwash is carried out when the filter gets chocked from the accumulated load of the suspended solids that is retained from the stream of in-feed raw water, the result of this is seen in the performance of the filter where one of two things is observed: either the flow drops, or the suspended solid composition increases in the product water line. This activity is monitored by a differential pressure gauge which indicates the appropriate time to carry out a backwash.
